A leverage flush hit bullish traders early, though Bitcoin quickly clawed back above the $83,000 line
Bitcoin dropped below $83,000, and the traders betting on higher prices paid for it. Nearly $42 million in long positions were liquidated before US stock markets even opened.
That early-morning wipeout was reportedly part of a bigger purge. Close to $696 million in positions were cleared out across a 24-hour window, mostly from longs.
What actually happened
The move came on October 8, 2026, according to research compiled on the event. Intraday lows were reported in a range between $82,880 and $83,500, depending on the venue and the data source.
The dip did not last long. Bitcoin recovered to around $83,100 shortly afterward, putting it back above the line it had just fallen through.
A liquidation, for the uninitiated, is what happens when a trader borrows money to amplify a bet and the market moves the wrong way. Once losses eat through the trader’s collateral, the exchange closes the position automatically. Nobody asks for permission.

Those forced closures are sell orders in a long-heavy market. Sell orders push the price lower, which triggers more liquidations, which push the price lower still.
The research describes this particular episode as a leverage flush rather than a response to some big new piece of news. Trading volumes were relatively quiet, and analysts tracking the move did not tie it to any meaningful change in market fundamentals.

The backdrop: oil, outflows, and a familiar price zone
Oil prices were rising on geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, adding a layer of macro anxiety to risk assets in general.
Bitcoin exchange-traded funds were also seeing ongoing outflows. When the institutional on-ramp is running in reverse, it removes a steady source of buying that might otherwise cushion a dip.
Meanwhile, open interest in Bitcoin derivatives had been climbing. Open interest measures the total value of outstanding futures and perpetual contracts, so a high reading means lots of positions waiting to be either rewarded or punished.
Liquidation trackers such as Coinglass were central to measuring the damage. On-chain activity on platforms like Hyperliquid, where perpetual futures trade transparently, also showed sizable leveraged positions stacked up in the market.
Bitcoin had recently traded at highs between $85,000 and $87,000, and profit-taking after that run appears to have contributed to the pullback. Traders who bought near the top and leveraged up were the most exposed when the price slid back toward the low $83,000s.
Why $83,000 keeps showing up
Throughout 2026, the $83,000 to $84,000 band has acted as a critical inflection point for Bitcoin, according to the research. Breaks through this area have repeatedly set off liquidation cascades, with totals often running into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
What this means for traders and investors
Bitcoin did not keep falling after breaking below $83,000, and it reclaimed that level quickly. The research characterizes the move as mechanical unwinding, not a sustained wave of selling.
The nearly $42 million in pre-market liquidations and the roughly $696 million cleared over 24 hours are a reminder that leverage cuts both ways, and usually faster on the way down.
For longer-term investors, elevated open interest and crowded positioning near a well-known price zone are conditions that tend to produce these flushes. Watching derivatives data from trackers like Coinglass and on-chain leverage on venues like Hyperliquid can offer early clues about when the market is getting top-heavy.

Saudi Arabia is dealing with new drone and missile attacks, as reported by Bloomberg Markets. The attacks, attributed to the Iran-backed Houthi movement in Yemen, have targeted key locations such as King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. In response, Saudi authorities are actively tracking and responding to these threats. The escalation follows the breakdown of a truce in July, resulting in heightened military tensions in the region. The ongoing conflict has led to speculation about possible airspace closures as a security measure.
Key Takeaways
Saudi Arabia is experiencing a significant escalation in hostilities, consistent with increased likelihood of airspace closure scenarios.
Market pricing suggests a rise in perceived risks, with YES outcomes for airspace closure by December 31 now priced at approximately 20%.
The recent attacks and responses appear consistent with scenarios that would support further military action and potential airspace restrictions.
What to Watch
Observers should monitor any announcements from the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) or Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS) regarding airspace status. Key indicators include further Houthi attacks on major airports or direct military escalations involving Saudi forces. Developments in diplomatic efforts or ceasefire talks could also influence market perceptions of airspace closure risks. The period leading up to January 1, 2027, shows increased market sensitivity, suggesting that market participants anticipate potential catalysts for airspace decisions.

The third-generation in-house accelerator targets AI inference efficiency, with production rollout slated for 2027
Microsoft has introduced the Maia 300, its third-generation in-house AI chip, and it has a very specific job in mind. The company says the chip is designed to serve as the “primary AI inference system” behind Microsoft’s own products and services.
What Microsoft is promising
The headline metric is energy efficiency. Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud group, put a number on it.
“We expect Maia 300 to deliver 40 percent more tokens per megawatt compared to leading GPU-based systems.”
For the uninitiated, tokens are the small chunks of text an AI model reads and writes. More tokens per megawatt means more AI output for the same electricity bill, which matters when power has become one of the tightest constraints on data center growth.
Note the framing, though. Guthrie said Microsoft expects that result. It is a target, not a benchmark anyone has independently verified yet.

The chip will start rolling out to production in 2027. So customers and investors are evaluating a promise with a lead time measured in quarters, not weeks.
From tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands
The real story may be scale. Research findings indicate Microsoft is negotiating with TSMC to manufacture over 300,000 Maia 300 chips for delivery in 2027.

Longer term, the company is reportedly eyeing production exceeding a million units. That ambition depends on component availability and advanced packaging capacity, two areas where the entire industry has been fighting over a limited supply.
Compare that to the previous generation. The Maia 200, released in January 2026, saw limited production of only tens of thousands of units.
The Maia 200 itself was built on TSMC’s 3nm process, carried 216GB of HBM3e memory alongside substantial on-chip SRAM, and achieved 30% better performance per dollar than Microsoft’s previous hardware.
The custom silicon arms race
Microsoft is not alone in this. Google and Amazon have their own custom AI chips, and the big cloud providers have all concluded that relying entirely on one supplier for their most important hardware is an uncomfortable position.
Research findings indicate Microsoft has been in discussions about broader adoption of Maia chips beyond its own operations, with potential interest from customers such as Anthropic.
Those are discussions, not signed deals. Still, if Maia chips eventually serve outside customers, Microsoft would shift from merely trimming its own costs to competing more directly in the AI hardware market.
What this means for Microsoft, Nvidia, and the market
For investors watching the AI hardware space, several markers are worth tracking. First, whether Microsoft finalizes the TSMC volume deal at the reported scale. Second, whether the efficiency target survives real-world deployment in 2027. Third, and perhaps most interesting, is whether any outside customer like Anthropic actually commits to Maia hardware. That would turn a cost-cutting tool into a product, and change how the competitive map of AI chips looks.

A significant movement of Solana (SOL) was detected on the blockchain, involving the transfer of 1,142,334 SOL, worth approximately $125.86 million, between two unidentified wallets. This transaction represents about 0.19% of Solana’s circulating supply. The lack of identifiable exchange custody or staking activity suggests that the transaction’s immediate market impact may be limited to documenting a large on-chain movement rather than indicating a directional shift in SOL’s market behavior. The current market environment has seen Solana in the range of $110 to $112, with a market capitalization near $66 billion.
Key Takeaways
The transfer of over 1 million SOL appears to capture market attention due to its volume, though it lacks immediate observable implications for exchange or staking activities.
Market pricing suggests a cautious outlook on Solana’s potential to reach $190 in October, with current odds reflecting concerns over liquidity or market manipulation.
Observers note that such transactions could influence participant sentiment, potentially affecting short-term price predictions.
What to Watch
Market participants will be closely monitoring any subsequent transactions involving these wallets, which might provide further context on the transfer’s purpose. Key actors such as Solana Labs and regulatory bodies like the SEC may play roles in shaping future market dynamics. Developments like successful mainnet activations or regulatory changes could shift market sentiment, while potential network outages or enforcement actions against major SOL issuers could drive price volatility. The ongoing performance of broader markets, including Bitcoin’s trajectory, may also influence SOL’s price action.

In brief Bitmine acquired 12,532 ETH over the past week, bringing its holdings to 6,028,946 ETH, or 4.9% of Ethereum's supply.
Chairman Tom Lee said the firm needs about 100,000 more ETH to reach its 5% target, after which it will be "done stacking."
Lee predicted the largest crypto bull market ever, citing tokenization, a generational wealth transfer and supply held by treasury firms.
Bitmine Immersion Technologies bought 12,532 ETH over the past week, worth about $31.9 million at the $2,544 price the company used to value its holdings and lifting its holdings to 6,028,946 ETH, the company said Monday.
The stash represents 4.9% of the total 122.1 million Ethereum token supply, leaving the firm 99% of the way to its goal of owning 5%, a target it calls the "Alchemy of 5%."

BitMine provided its latest holdings update for October 12, 2026 $16.2 billion in total crypto + "moonshots":
- 6,028,946 ETH at $2,544 per ETH (per @coinbase)

- $180 million stake in Beast Industries @MrBeast
- $85 million stake in Eightco Holdings… — Bitmine (NYSE-BMNR) $ETH $BMNP (@BitMNR) October 12, 2026
Bitmine bought $41 million more ETH the week before. In a press release, the firm's Chairman Tom Lee claimed that its “track record of consistent buying of crypto is unmatched by any public company in the world.”
The company valued its ETH at $2,544 per token, and put its total crypto, cash and investment holdings at $16.2 billion. That includes 214 BTC, $612 million in cash and marketable securities, and stakes worth $180 million in Beast Industries and $85 million in Eightco Holdings.
The firm has staked 5,067,309 ETH, which Lee said generates annualized staking revenue of about $336 million.
'Done stacking'
In his monthly Chairman's message last week, Lee said Bitmine needs "about 100,000 more ETH, and that's about it." He has said the firm's Ethereum buying will stop once it reaches its target.
"Now we're done stacking while a bull market is starting," Lee said in the video. "So if we're done stacking, but ETH goes up a lot, you can imagine that we'll outperform Ethereum."
Lee predicted the crypto bull market would be "the biggest bull market we've ever seen," driven by tokenization, a wealth transfer to younger investors, supply absorbed by digital asset treasury firms, and AI agents using crypto wallets.
He said Bitmine shares, then around $26, are 90% correlated with ETH, and projected that ETH at $22,000 would put the stock at $300 to $500.
Lee also pointed to Bitmine's 9.5% perpetual preferred stock, BMNP, which was issued at $80 in June and last closed at $99.53, according to the release.

Counterpoint data shows the weakest third quarter since 2012 as AI data centers pull memory supply away from phone makers
The smartphone industry just had its worst third quarter in more than a decade. Global shipments fell 20% year-over-year in Q3 2026, according to preliminary data Counterpoint Research released on October 12, 2026.
That marks the lowest third-quarter total since 2012.
The culprit is not weak demand for phones so much as overwhelming demand for something else. AI data centers are consuming memory chip production capacity, and smartphone makers are paying the price.
Who got hit, and how hard
Xiaomi took the biggest hit among the major players, with shipments dropping by over 30%. Its market share slid to 10%.

OPPO and vivo did not fare much better. Both brands posted year-over-year shipment declines of more than 20%.
Samsung held onto the top spot with a 23% market share. Its shipments slipped 3%.

Apple reached a record 22% market share for a third quarter, the first time it has cleared 20% in this particular quarter.
Apple got there largely by leaning into premium device sales. When the whole market shrinks and your customers are the least price-sensitive buyers in the room, your slice of the pie grows even if the pie itself is getting smaller.
Phones were not alone in their misery. IDC data shows PC shipments fell 20.1% in Q3 2026.
The AI memory squeeze
The buildout of AI infrastructure has diverted memory production capacity toward data center customers. That shift has created supply constraints across the consumer electronics market, resulting in higher costs at every step. Manufacturers pay more for components, which pushes up production costs and, eventually, retail prices.
Manufacturers are responding by streamlining their portfolios and steering toward premium offerings. Fewer models, higher price tags, and less exposure to the thin-margin segment where component inflation hurts most.
Consumers are keeping their phones longer
Counterpoint analyst Shilpi Jain has pointed to consumers holding onto their devices for longer periods. Those who do upgrade are increasingly turning to refurbished phones or higher-value models.
What this means for the industry
The memory shortage is anticipated to persist into 2027. Full-year 2026 global smartphone shipments are forecast to decline approximately 14%.

The exchange is testing transactions with professional participants as Russia builds regulated infrastructure for cryptocurrency trading and custody.
Moscow Exchange plans to launch cryptocurrency trading on December 1, according to an October 8 Interfax report citing Boris Blokhin, the exchange’s senior managing director for sales and business development.
Blokhin said testing with professional market participants had begun about a week earlier. The exchange plans to use a partner digital depository where participants will open accounts, and he said no additional permits or licenses would be needed for the launch.
The planned rollout follows Russia’s new law on digital currencies and digital rights, which took effect September 1. The framework allows cryptocurrency transactions through existing financial institutions, including brokers and asset managers, while introducing digital depositories to record ownership of the assets.
Russia’s central bank has already begun admitting firms to the new market. On October 6, it registered the first five digital depositories and four cryptocurrency exchange operators under the law’s transitional provisions.
Depositories can record and transfer digital currencies and provide clients with access to the addresses holding them. The registered exchange operators can buy and sell cryptocurrencies on their own account outside organized trading.

Investor access will depend on qualification status. Ordinary investors will be able to purchase Bitcoin, Ether and Tether’s USDT within an annual limit of 300,000 rubles through each intermediary.
Qualified investors will have access to cryptocurrencies available on exchange and other trading venues without an amount limit. Both groups must pass a test before trading.
The framework expands investment access while maintaining the prohibition on using cryptocurrency for domestic payments. Exporters and importers, however, can use digital assets for international payments through intermediaries or directly through wallets, according to the Bank of Russia.

GTA 6 Leaker Teases 'Playable Build' Launch, Doubles Down on Crypto Scheme

The group behind the Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks is once again trying to rake in funds, this time by dangling the prospect of releasing a "Full 200+GB playable build" of the anticipated video game.
On Saturday, CyberLeek published the "offer" on its website to drive up the price of the group’s meme coin on the Solana blockchain. “Here's the deal, nice and clean. CYBERLEEK hits 30 million marketcap, the build goes out — full story mode, played to the end, credits and all. Don't believe it has full story mode? Ask for what you want to see, and it gets provided,” it wrote.
On Monday, CyberLeek listed a “Full 200+GB playable build” as the ultimate milestone if the meme coin hits a $30 million market cap. For now, the coin has been estimated at a mere $2.5 million. It's also trading at $0.0034, well below the $0.025 it was valued at on Aug. 23 when the market cap was briefly at $23 million.
In addition, the coin's value appears to have only fallen despite the group's latest leaks. (Credit: CyberLeek)
We wouldn't be surprised if CyberLeek decides to cash out with the group's meme coin at some point. In late August, CyberLeek appeared to do just that, raking in an estimated $270,000, according to IGN.
The wording of CyberLeek’s newest posts makes it unclear whether the group plans to release footage of themselves playing GTA 6 to the end credits or if they’re set on dumping a workable copy that anyone can run. If real, the playable build could spoil the Nov. 19 release of GTA 6.
Preorders are already available. The game is only available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but some scammers have been circulating fake PC versions to drain cryptocurrency wallets or trick users into downloading malware.
So far, the publisher for GTA 6, Take-Two Interactive, hasn’t responded to a request for comment. It subpoenaed user records at several companies, including Microsoft and Discord, but has clearly come up short in identifying the culprit.
In the meantime, CyberLeek has been posting more in-game footage, all but confirming the group somehow stole a playable copy of GTA 6. After going silent for a month, CyberLeek returned last Thursday with a 25-minute video of in-game footage. Over the weekend, the group dropped a couple more clips that show one of the main characters, Lucia, nude.
